چکیده

We discuss the theoretical description and numerical simulation of the effect of noise and environmental coupling on the momentum distribution of the quantum δ-kicked rotor in recent atom optics experiments. We investigate the transition between exponentially localized and more nearly Gaussian momentum distributions and compare our simulations with existing experimental results.

Chaos and Localisation: Quantum Transport in Periodically Driven Atomic Systems

This thesis investigates quantum transport in the energy space of two paradigm systems of quantum chaos theory. These are highly excited hydrogen atoms subject to a microwave field, and kicked atoms which mimic the δ−kicked rotor model. Both of these systems show a complex dynamical evolution arising from the interaction with an external time-periodic driving force. In particular two quantum ph...

Diffusion resonances in action space for an atom optics kicked rotor with decoherence.

We numerically investigate momentum diffusion rates for the pulse kicked rotor across the quantum to classical transition as the dynamics are made more macroscopic by increasing the total system action. For initial and late time rates we observe an enhanced diffusion peak which shifts and scales with changing kick strength, and we also observe distinctive peaks around quantum resonances. Our in...

Nonexponential decoherence and momentum subdiffusion in a quantum lévy kicked rotator.

We investigate decoherence in the quantum kicked rotator (modeling cold atoms in a pulsed optical field) subjected to noise with power-law tail waiting-time distributions of variable exponent (Lévy noise). We demonstrate the existence of a regime of nonexponential decoherence where the notion of a decoherence rate is ill defined. In this regime, dynamical localization is never fully destroyed, ...

An experimental realization of the quantum δ-kicked rotor

We study experimentally quantum effects in atomic motion for a classically chaotic regime. A standing wave is pulsed on periodically in time, and the resulting atomic momentum is measured. Momentum grows diffusively until the quantum break time, after which dynamical localization is observed. Quantum resonances are observed for certain pulse durations.

Anomalous diffusion and ballistic peaks: A quantum perspective

The quantum kicked rotor and the classical kicked rotor are both shown to have truncated Lévy distributions in momentum space, when the classical phase space has accelerator modes embedded in a chaotic sea. The survival probability for classical particles at the interface of an accelerator mode and the chaotic sea has an inverse power-law structure, whereas that for quantum particles has a peri...
